Acne tips for teens

Acne

When you look in the mirror and all you can see is that massive pimple… remember that 8/10 of your peers know how you feel, because they also suffered from acne at some time 1

Teenage acne may be a pretty common part of growing up but, having skin problems at this stage of your life can be terrible. Don’t let this stop you from looking for solutions – the earlier you start your treatment, the better! 1,2,3

Take control of your acne breakouts - this is what you can do…

1. Develop healthy habits and listen to the experts

Just take some time twice a day to follow these 3 easy  steps: 4, 5

CLEANSE: Wash your face gently

TREAT: Apply treatment gel/cream to your pimples once your skin is dry

PROTECT: Apply your moisturiser and sunscreen5

Hint: It will also help your acne if you take a shower, or at least wash your face, after your workout, when you have sweated heavily as perspiration can aggravate acne – it won’t hurt your chances with the girls either 4,5

Using a sunscreen with a SPF 30 or higher every day is also important to protect your skin from sun damage. 4

Galderma, a company specialising in products for teenage skin, has made it easy for you to stick to these steps with a Benzaderm Starter kit.

Hint:  Keep this next to your toothbrush so that you don’t forget to fight your acne twice a day!

The Benzaderm Starter kit has everything you need to follow the steps recommended by the experts

  1. Avoid doing things that make your acne worse
    • Stop picking or scratching your pimples. It’s tempting, but can actually make the problem worse and may even cause scarring
    • Don’t blame yourself for the acne! Remember that most teenagers get acne at some point and chances are that if you have acne, either your mom or dad may also have had acne when they were your age. Acne can be genetic 1,2
  2. Consider this when wearing makeup and shaving

Hint: Make-up, moisturisers and sunscreens should be applied on top of your morning or evening acne treatment 5

Hint: Make sure that your blades are always sharp, so that you can just apply light pressure when you shave 4, 5

Wearing make-up can make you feel more confident - especially if it helps conceal acne redness and blemishes. Most cosmetic brands carry products designed for acne-prone skin so look out for these. 5  Just don’t forget to wash it all off before you go to bed though! 7

Guys, please don’t intentionally shave your pimples off. It is best to shave around the pimples in the direction of the hair growth. 4, 5

The good news is teenage skin problems don’t last forever, so be kind to yourself.

Remember to look after your skin and keep having fun – that will make you look and feel good.
